Transformation Tuesday | CrossFit and Paleo

TT

The last two of the list of things that helped me shed 45 pounds in 4 months are getting a lot of hate in Social Media lately and when I say “lately” I mean over a year now.

My shedding of that excess weight is all thanks to the things I do that I have discovered, has worked for me. It may not work for you, but it is worth a try since I’ve tried everything else.

I will be discussing the 4 things that I do regularly but will be concentrating on the last two since the first two have been socially accepted:
practice-lunge-1Yoga – It’s a workout of patience, endurance, and flexibility. Bikram Yoga adds a heated room in the mix with 26 different simple yet difficult poses or asanas. I acknowledge that there are other trendier and more “modern” Yoga practices out there but I believe in the saying that “nothing beats the classics”. Being in a 40°C room for 90 minutes is no joke. Even those who have done it for a long time have their “bad” days.

I love how this type of exercise can help you sweat so much. With so less intensity. I cannot say “less effort” because that is exactly the opposite of what Bikram Yoga does to you. It sweats all the bad sh*t away.

juicerJuicing – This is something that has been around for a little while but has already gained so many followers and haters alike. Why do I like it and why don’t I see this is a fad diet? Fad diets would make you lose a lot of weight by either going below your normal calorie intake or going through a more drastic approach by depriving “temporarily” the things you like to eat and end up eating twice the amount because you miss it.

Juincing, on the other hand allows you to consume all the nutrients you need while already removing all the unneeded fibers and “junk” the fruits and vegetables have that will have your body still need to absorb then expel. Juicing makes your body skip a step thus still giving you energy.

Now the next two that I will discuss is the real focus in this blog. Why another CrossFit and Paleo blog? It’s because none of the other blogs have really explained why we “preach” so much about these two for as long as we have preached about it.

Games2012_MA_Day1Midday_Floater3CrossFit – CrossFit is something that I have been doing for a little over 2 years now in total. Prior to this I have experience similar exercise regimens by my coaches Chinggay Andrada and Jim Saret when I was still part of the Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition back in 2011. The exercises that we do in CrossFit are a combination of cardio, gymnastics, and olympic weightlifting and it is mixed or combined in a way where it will give you the maximum benefit without needing to spend so much time in the gym.

Your body “suffers” in a workout within the first 10 minutes then once you’ve hit the 10 minute mark, your body adapts and gets used to the workout. Yes, you may still lose weight and sweat alot but it’ll take a much longer time to sweat and lose the weight more if you stayed in the same exercise for the rest of the time. So what do you do? You “shock” the body by switching the movement. Same as how Bikram yoga does a certain asana for just a few seconds twice before changing the movement.

Paleo-PyramidPaleo – Otherwise known as the Caveman Diet. This diet consists nothing but lean protein, good fat, and some type of complex carbohydrates all mixed together to strengthen you for the day. A quick start guide of what Paleo to me is can be found in an older post I made last April. You can find it here. Please come back when you’re done, ok?

I love what Paleo does to me. It energizes me enough to get me through my workout and yet, it still helps me lose weight. Paleo is not a weight loss diet, mind you. Weight loss is, however, the byproduct of doing Paleo. Paleo, believe it or not, makes me do my “business” much smoother and it even makes me sleep better at night. Eating clean has never been so tasty.

The people who I run to when I am too lazy to prepare food for myself are GoPaleo by Larissa and Paleo Manila. They offer the best tasting Paleo-friendly meals you can buy and I’m not saying that just because they are my friends but also because I am their customer.

To sum up what CrossFit and Paleo are, look at this:

Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J, and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc, hard and fast. Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports.
– Fitness In 100 Words or Less – by Greg Glassman (Founder of CrossFit)

Why do we enthusiasts or “fanatics” love to talk about it so much? Simply put, because it works for us and with”us” I would say a really big percentage across the globe. If there is something that you believe works so well for you, you would want to tell the world about it, right?

I practically grew up being overweight but this has helped me with my physical goals. Of course I want the world to know about it especially if I have tried and failed with a dozen or so other workout and eating regimens out there.

Bottom line, CrossFit and Paleo work; Yoga, Juicing, CrossFit, and Paleo work for me. I wouldn’t be talking about it if I haven’t seen the results myself. I am not like those others who would preach about losing weight but not show how much they’ve really lost. This blog is all about showing the losing weight is really difficult, that regular people like me fail so many times, but once you’ve found the right combination that works for you, you will stick to it and you will tell everyone about it.

Yoga is powered by Bikram Yoga Alabang.

Juicing is powered by Breville, Philippines.

I go to CFMNL at the Fort Bonifacio Gymnasium, Fort Bonifacio.

I eat Paleo almost EVERYWHERE!
